BASF launches biodegradable packaging plastic

BASF has released Ecovio FS, a biodegradable plastic designed for use in packaging applications.
The new product is designed to offer thickness and flexibility to manufacturers of shrink film-based wrapping, while maintaining good environmental performance.
Key to its sustainable nature is its use of renewable raw materials sourced from substances such as corn starch, allowing it to biodegrade more rapidly than other similar products.
BASF states that the plastic has been launched as part of a planned new focus on renewable technology of this kind, which it has identified as a profitable approach.
Andreas Kunkel, head of BASF's market development for new biodegradable plastic products, said this will allow it to capitalise on "the broad potential we anticipate for technically advanced bio¬degradable products in this market, which has become very diversified".
Earlier this week, the chemical company revealed that it is to demonstrate a new initiative which will allow customers to access data about the composition and environmental performance of its products.
