Symphony Environmental Tech launches biodegradable plastic products in Morocco

Degradable plastics and waste-to-energy company Symphony Environmental Technologies PLC (AIM: SYM) announced a 15 year agreement for Morocco to distribute plastic products incorporating its d2w biodegration additives.
It signed an agreement with domestic environmental marketing group Greenberry Sarl and Symphony’s French distributor Alternative Plastics Sarl (APS) for the distribution of d2w controlled-life plastic products in the country. Supermarket chain Label'Vie is the first to launch d2w-treated plastics, in the form of carrier bags.
Symphony cited Rachid Hadni, CEO of Label'Vie Group Morocco, as saying: “Having reviewed and trialled all of the alternatives, we have found d2w to be the ideal solution as well as being economically sustainable. We will be launching d2w shopping bags in all our stores from January 2010.”
D2w additives make plastic oxo-biodegradable. It will break down to its basic components of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon after a while and does not stay behind for centuries before it degrades. The technology is based on a small amount of pro-degrading additive being introduced into the manufacturing process of plastic products. The process allows Symphony to determine after which period biodegradation begins.
Last month, the company signed a supply agreement with the Danish packaging products maker Superfos Industries AS under which, for a minimum period of 5 years, Superfos EU will have EU exclusivity for the manufacture of a range of top-filled injection moulded rigid plastic packaging using special grade d2w additives, and the use of the d2w trademark on all such packaging.
