Greens push to tax plastic bags

Australians would be charged 25 cents for each plastic bag they use when buying goods under a plan proposed by the Australian Greens.
Party leader Bob Brown has introduced legislation into the Senate today that would force retailers to charge 25 cents for each bag they supply to customers.
Senator Brown says the levy would be paid into a national fund that could be used to minimise hazardous waste.
Biodegradable plastic bags would be hit by the levy, however it wouldn't apply on bags used to carry baked goods, non-packaged fruit and vegetables, or fresh meat and fish.
Debate on the Plastic Bag Levy Bill has adjourned.
