Young business owner Trsitan Bauer of Coogee has created a bio-degradable, compostable shopping bag.
With 4.5 billion plastic bags used by Australian’s each year and growing momentum for a national ban on all light weight plastic bags, business owner and Coogee resident Tristan Bauer has used his initiative to develop an innovative and environmentally-friendly shopping solution.

Greens push to tax plastic bags

Australians would be charged 25 cents for each plastic bag they use when buying goods under a plan proposed by the Australian Greens.
Party leader Bob Brown has introduced legislation into the Senate today that would force retailers to charge 25 cents for each bag they supply to customers.
Senator Brown says the levy would be paid into a national fund that could be used to minimise hazardous waste.

Motion on plastic bags misses the point

Australia - On November 10, the Tasmanian Greens put forward a motion in Parliament to ban non-biodegradable plastic bags, which received the support of the Labor and Liberal parties. Whilst The Greens’ Cassey O’Connor may be expounding the beauties of a “balance-of-power” Parliament, it might be more beneficial to the environment to focus on the much larger tonnes of waste entering landfill and producing harmful gases, writes Melissa Burn.
The next step to progress with the motion is to create legislation and once approved phase in a ban of plastic bags over six to 12 months.

Billabong founder purchases bio-plastics manufacturer

Gordon Merchant, founder of the Billabong surf wear empire and rich list member, is set to buy Melbourne-based bio plastics manufacturer Plantic Technologies in a deal worth about $10.2 million.
Merchant, who was valued at $874 million on the BRW Rich 200, has been a long-time investor in Plantic, which was established in 2001 and is listed on London's Alternative Investment Market.
